i come from scotland which has a curious history in this regard and something i allude to in the book. if you had gone to scotland early in my story, say in the late 16, 17 and censure when a calvinist were really taking control and when edinboro, i imagine was rather like tehran after the islamic revolution, it was a theocratic am intolerant and rather awful society to be a part of. with a level of an intolerance of even having fun in any shape or form were amazingly high. but this was the extreme case of puritanism and yet, in that same city of edinburgh within a century you had one of the greatest flowering south secular thinking, the enlightenment, of all time. this is the city that produces adam smith and all of his contemporaries. probably the greatest generation of intellectuals the west has ever seen. something extraordinary happens in scotland which i don't think historians have fully expect which got it from its theocratic intolerant calvinist days to its dazzling enlightenment heyday all in the space of 150 years. >> host: my theory is they were all looking for consumerism

andrews university in scotland, to help celebrate the school's 600th anniversary. nbc's michelle kusinski is on the scottish coast line this morning. how did their home coming go? >> hi, contessa. it was such a gorgeous day here. golden light, kind of uncharacteristic for scotland in the winter time. not a spot of rain. by all accounts kate looked radiant in vibrant red matching the robes of the students here. bells were peeling, bag pipes were playing. it was almost weddingesque in some aspects. the students really commented on how sweet it was that they were here where their fairy tale romance began a decade ago. they entered as freshmen in 2001. they were friends, lived in the same dorm, both studied art history. you know, it's said that about mid year of their freshman year when william was about to not come back from break he was home sick and unhappy, that it was kate who persuaded him to stay and to switch his major to geography. then, of course, there was that dress, the pictures we see sometimes of kate in that see through thing that she wore on a catwalk
